Dr. Sharmila Mitra Mukhopadhyay is Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Director of Center for Nanoscale Multifunctional Materials at Wright State University. Her interests are in nano-materials, surface and interface phenomena, and multidisciplinary materials education. She received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Indian Institute of Technology and Ph.D. from Cornell University. She joined the Mechanical and Materials Engineering Department of WSU in 1997 after working as Post Doc. at Rutgers University and Assistant Professor at Polytechnic University. At WSU, she is a recipient of the Trustees' Award for Faculty Excellence, which is the highest award given by the university “to outstanding Wright State University full-time, fully-affiliated faculty who have demonstrated a sustained and balanced contribution to the teaching, research, and professional service mission of the university. The award is intended to honor those who serve as the most outstanding of role models for all Faculty.”

Dr. Mukhopadhyay has published over 120 papers and technical reports and has obtained and directed over 5 million dollars in research funding from federal and state agencies such as NSF, DOE, AFOSR, AFRL, NASA, OBOR, EPA, as well as industry. She serves on several boards and review panels of funding agencies, professional organizations, community outreach groups, and scientific journals such as the National Science Foundation, the ASM-Dayton Chapter, American Ceramic Society, ISRN-Condensed matter Physics, and Metallurgical Transactions. She has organized and co-organized several national and international symposia, and is past chair of the Electronics Division of American Ceramic Society. She is listed in "Who's Who in the World", "Who's Who in America" and "Who's Who in Science and Engineering", and is an elected Fellow of the American Ceramic Society.
